I joined Stirling Dynamics as a summer placement student after I graduated from Bath University in June 2006. My main project during this placement involved working on the migration of ground loads calculations from an old system to a new system for Airbus UK. From the start I was given a large amount of responsibility and was primarily in charge of liaising with the customer (Airbus technical contact) over all project related issues. My time was spent split between working at Stirling’s Clifton office and working on site at Airbus, Filton. This gave me a good insight into both a large scale engineering company and a smaller consultancy based firm. Following a gap year spent travelling I decided to come back to Stirling as a full time employee. My main reason for this was that Stirling Dynamics is a rapidly growing company and there are therefore more and more opportunities for graduate engineers to progress. I am now in charge of analysing the Airbus UK in-service hard landing incidents and am gaining experience and knowledge in many different aspects of engineering.

I joined Stirling Dynamics just over two years ago, whilst finishing my PhD at Bristol University. Since then I have worked in the systems group modelling, simulating and analysing a range of dynamic systems. Within this time I have been involved in projects including electromechanical actuation of helicopter primary flight controls, submarine modelling and autopilot design, and functional modelling of helicopter avionics for a training flight simulator. The wide range of engineering domains and disciplines that Stirling Dynamics is involved in allow you to expand your engineering knowledge and develop your career. This is supported within the company by placing you on projects that advance your current knowledge and experience. The relaxed and sociable working environment supports this culture by making it easy to pass knowledge and experience between engineers.

I joined Stirling Dynamics a year ago, after working at Bath University as a Research Officer. I joined the Aerospace Systems team, working in a small group for customers such as BAE Systems, Airbus and Claverham Ltd. We offer a high quality consultancy service specialising in dynamic simulation and control, using tools such as Matlab and Simulink. My biggest projects have been modelling an active inceptor (BAE Systems, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter), and simulation and control of electro-hydraulic primary flight control units (Claverham Ltd). Stirling Dynamics has a relaxed working atmosphere and experienced, approachable staff who are happy to help when you need it. Combined with the high profile customers and the opportunity to move to different fields, it’s a very attractive place to work.
